New Classes AddedThe Training Center is always on the lookout for new opportunities to train members. Now more than ever, Laborers need to have the proper training and certifications to perform their jobs. Learning new technology is one way that you, the member, can make yourself even more of an asset to contractors looking for a skilled Laborer to complete the job effectively and efficiently. As such, we have added the following courses to the curriculum at the training center: Global Positioning Devices(GPS): No, this isn't about teaching you how to use those personal GPS's that tell you where you are! This intensive 40-hour course combines classroom training and extensive hands-on field exercises in the principals of operation, application, and measuring techniques used in GPS systems and also C.O.G.O.(coordinate geometry) software functions. *Note: A passing grade of 80% on both hands-on exercises and exams is needed to pass this class. PREREQUISITES: 24-hour Line & Grade, 40-hour Line & Grade(advanced); 24-hour Blueprint(Heavy/Highway) is also recommended. Line & Grade(advanced): This 40-hour in-depth course is designed to further the skills & knowledge learned in the basic 24-hour Line & Grade. Topics covered include stoking procedures, curb & gutters, and using construction instruments(level & transmit) to perform field layout related to heavy & highway. Students will be introduced to the advanced mathematic(geometry & trigonometry) principals needed when performing field layout and their uses as a basis in GPS training. *Note: A passing grade of 80% is needed to advance to the GPS class. PREREQUISITE: 24-hour Line & Grade; 24-hour Blueprint(Heavy/Highway) is also recommended. Here's an example of a problem you might see in this class: Find the distance from Point A to Point C Take a sighting on the tree(Point C) from the new point downstream(Point B). That’s the dotted line. The transit will tell us what our sighting angle is. In this case, it’s 40°30’.
You can use your scientific calculator to find the tangent of 40°30’:
The answer equals XXXXXX, rounded to XXXXXX. If we multiply XXXXXX by the known distance of 400’, we will find that the distance from Point A to Point C is XXXXXX. Want to know the answer? Take the class! As always, you can check the course schedules for times when these classes are offered, or you can call the Training Center to put your name on a waiting list until the class is offered again.
Workzone Safety Classes and Requirements Safety is always a primary concern in the construction industry. Rules and regulations are always being added or amended to help protect workers in the field. One of these new Federal mandates affects members who perform work in a highway workzone. The mandate is:
As of October 12, 2007, all members working in a highway workzone will have to have the 10-hour OSHA course, as well as the 8-hour Flagging.
Please call the Training Center to schedule for those classes, or if you have questions about this new mandate.
Gridlock at the Training Center! Our 40-hour Rodtying class at the Training Center is a popular one. Lee Kontis is teaching his class in these photos the proper techniques to create a reinforcement mesh of rebar to strengthen the concrete coming later.
Building Walls & Testing Concrete!A first at the Training Center: sunny days and warm temperatures during a concrete class! Students enrolled in the April 16-20 class learned the ins and outs of creating forms to build concrete walls and how to pour fresh slabs. They also were taught how to test the concrete.
Cutting & Burning Class At Work!Training can be fun, as you can see by these smiley faces! Students taking this 24-hour course are hard at work practicing what they have learned, cutting & burning various pieces of iron and steel to earn their certification.
Full House of TraineesThe winter months are our busy time up here at the Training Center, as evidenced by this photo of the cars in our parking lot. Usually, work is slow this time of the year, making it an ideal time for Laborers to come up and further their training. The more classes you take, the better qualified you become to be sent out for a job.
Check out the monthly course schedules on this website, at your Local Union hall, or by picking one up at a union meeting.
