LABOR DAY PARADE A SUCCESS!!!

    Beautiful weather again made an appearance for this year's Labor Day Parade. On Monday, Sept 3, members from all trades gathered to show support for the labor movement. Pittsburgh once again made this parade arguably the largest in the country. And of course, one of the largest groups there were the Laborers'. Decked out in safety green shirts, we made an impressive showing, marching from Mellon Arena down to the Steel Workers building.  Thanks goes out to all of the members, their families and friends who participated in this event.

LABORERS HELP REPAIR HOME FOR NEEDY FAMILY

    The Laborers District Council, through a very generous monetary donation, partnered with The Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh project to provide critical home repairs for a Pittsburgh family.  The Rebuilding Together Pittsburgh charity is a non-profit organization which sponsors home repair for elderly and low income families in the Pittsburgh area.  The home in the south borough of Pittsburgh belonged to a man who has brain and lung cancer.  Although he is only in his early thirties, his battle with cancer has been ongoing for the past seven years.  Along with his wife, they have two young children.  April 30, 2005 marked the official day for the home repairs, but the Laborers got started much earlier to ensure that the repairs were completed.

    Earlier in the month, volunteer Laborers from locals 1058, 373, and 1451 started the project, which began by constructing a new sidewalk for wheelchair access.  The existing sidewalk was only 18 inches wide and 120 feet long.  The sidewalk was first hammered out and removed, and the necessary 3 feet width was dug out and formed.  The stone grade was then wheeled in by hand and set.  Then came the pouring of the concrete, which was supplied for free by Frank Bryan Inc.  Finally, the sidewalk was finished and landscaped.

    The second phase of the project took place on the Rebuilding Day.  Two new louvered doors were hung in the basement to give better air circulation to the furnace unit.  The old cracked and warped brick molding on the patio doors was stripped and replaced with new brick molding.  A handicap hand rail was also installed in the bathroom for access in the shower.  A major danger was also fixed in the basement by replacing some wiring and framing for the electrical inlet.  The existing inlet was hanging from ceiling, and by framing and setting it to the wall, it eliminated the danger of electrocution for the family.  Repainting of some of the ceiling along with landscaping around the yard was also completed.

    The Laborers provided well over 300 hours of volunteer work on the home, well worth it to be able to help out a family in need.  The Laborers District Council of Western PA would like to thank the following members for all their time and hard work:

LOCAL 1058:  Mike Laquatra, Joseph Laquatra Jr., Sam Manfredo, Curt Bevilacqua, Walter Schnelbach, Joseph Guidy

LOCAL 373:  Bill Brooks, Matt McHugh, David Manion, Matt Cooper, Dean Sedlar

Local 1451: Dennis Mazzoni

MAP PROGRAM

    The Membership Assistance Program(MAP) is a plan benefit available to all eligible plan participants of the Laborers' District Council of Western Pennsylvania Welfare Fund.  The Fund recognizes that personal concerns both on and off the job can affect a worker's health and job performance.  Left untreated, these problems can not only impact work performance, but may lead to higher accident rates, workers' compensation costs, and health care costs.  Some of the problems MAP addresses are: substance abuse, family problems, financial/legal issues, and mental health.  MAP seeks to help members by providing the following services:

bullet

A voluntary, confidential counseling service designed to offer professional and confidential assistance with concerns that may arise from modern day living, including access to health care and medical treatment;

bullet

Consultation and training for union representatives, employer/contractor supervisory personnel in techniques for cooperative labor-management handling of workplace performance or heath concerns; and

bullet

Orientation and education sessions for workers and family members to promote the MAP's services and to help plan participants lead healthier lifestyles.
